When There's Not a Single Student in the Room

SO OFTEN, we think of classroom management as what happens when students are talking out of turn, lining up, or earning fuzzies in a jar. (High school teachers—if you don’t know about the fuzzy jar, go find your nearest elementary teacher. They’ll explain.)

But as Christian educators, there’s an important discovery waiting to be made: Classroom management is not just what happens during the school day. In fact, some of the most powerful management happens when there’s not a single student in the room.

Here’s what I mean: If you want better classroom management, it begins with preparing your mind before your students ever walk through the door.

When a teacher is rooted in preparation, students feel it.On the flip side, when a teacher is unsteady, they feel that too. And, boy, do they know how to make the most of that unsteadiness!

Consider the following ways to prepare your heart and mind ahead of time:

  • Pray for your students. This isn’t simplistic—it’s powerful. You have direct access to the One who knows every heart in your classroom.
  • Anchor your thinking in Scripture. When Scripture is your anchor, your approach to discipline, expectations, and communication becomes more consistent with Christ’s example—firm yet compassionate, just yet merciful. It reminds you that teaching is not only a profession but a ministry.
  • Write down your plan. Clearly outline your expectations and procedures. But also prepare for the unexpected…What will you say when a student is being sarcastic? How will you address disruptions calmly, without letting them slide? Planning those small responses in advance helps keep you grounded when emotions rise. (Because let’s be honest—in the heat of the moment, our emotions don’t always make the best decisions!)

If you want even better classroom management, reflect after the day is done: 

  • Not every day. But maybe once a week, or even once a month, ask yourself: What’s working well? What feels messy or inconsistent? Is there a time of day that always feels off? Those quiet moments of honesty allow us to adjust before problems grow, and they keep us aligned with our purpose.

Classroom management isn’t just what happens with students. It’s what happens before they arrive—and after they leave. When we prepare our minds with intention and reflect with humility, we create a space where students can be mentored instead of just “managed” in the classroom.
