Connection: We All Need It

Editor's Letter

I vividly remember the first time I cried in the car on the way home from school many years ago...

It was my first year of teaching, and I couldn’t stop thinking about one of my students. What little I knew of her home life broke my heart. While she never disrupted class, she rarely put forth any effort. By this point in the school year, she was at risk of missing out on being promoted to the next grade level for the second time, and she had fallen asleep once again in my class. I felt discouraged because I didn’t know how to help this child. I knew her performance in my class was influenced by so much more than what was happening in my classroom. I didn’t know how to ask for help or whom to ask, but I knew I needed something.

"Therefore if you have any encouragement from being united with Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others."
Philippians 2:1-4 (NIV)

After reading the first four verses of Philippians 2, I now know what I really needed at that moment in my teaching career.

I needed other Christian educators. I needed intercessors surrounding me with prayer.  I needed to hear Scripture spoken over the life of my student by colleagues who love Jesus, their students, and each other. I needed encouragement and support. I needed to connect with other Christian educators who, united in Christ, were filled with the Holy Spirit.

I didn’t have that then, but I do now as a member of CEAI. And, if you are a CEAI member, you do as well. Being a part of this organization provides more than just liability insurance and job action protection. While these are very important, CEAI also connects Christian educators who love God and want to impact their schools with His love.

I encourage you to connect with the other members of CEAI if you haven’t already. Christian educators need each other, especially now when Christian values seem to be discriminated against in public arenas. Imagine the impact we can have on our schools if we value each other, supporting one another with unity in love, spirit, and mind.
